Issue 01Modern family life, considered slowly

Lead story

The Village Was Never Just About Raising Children

"It takes a village to raise a child." It is one of those phrases that has become part of everyday conversation. Parents often use it when talking about the challenges of raising children without nearby family, affordable childcare or enough hours in the day. It captures a feeling that many families recognise: parenting can be hard, and doing it alone can feel even harder.

From the Editor

A calm place to read, reflect and begin again.

The Family Lens is not a feed to race through. It is a carefully curated publication for people who care about the texture of family life: the home, the learning, the walks, the worries, the discoveries and the small decisions that shape a week.

We will always choose clarity over noise, warmth over performance and useful questions over easy answers.

The Editor's Journey

Built on two decades of understanding family life

The Family Lens is the culmination of more than twenty years spent exploring what family life really looks like. That journey began by working directly with children and families, before moving into research, designing services and support for families, identifying gaps in the systems intended to help them, and writing extensively about the realities of modern family life.

Alongside that professional experience has been an equally important personal one: raising four children, each with their own personalities, strengths and challenges. Family life has never been an abstract subject. It has been lived every day.

Those experiences led to the creation of Mummy Fever, one of the UK's long-established independent family publications, where thousands of articles explored parenting, education, travel, health and the everyday questions families ask themselves.

The Family Lens is the next chapter. It builds on everything that came before while creating space for slower, deeper and more thoughtful journalism about modern family life.
